There was a small write up in today’s Estadão (which my Brazilian friends say is the equivalent of the NY Times) about Swamp Boys and my working with the BOS BBQ team. Here is a picture I was sent:

And here is a link to the article online: http://www.estadao.com.br/noticias/impresso,churrasco-nao-e-barbecue-medalhista-de-peito-(e-de-costela)-,913747,0.htm

Pretty cool 🙂

Last year in Ocala I finished as RGC so this year of course I had a GC on my mind. I felt I had a very good cook and put everything into the hands of the judges. They seemed to agree awarding me a first place in both Chicken and Ribs. My Pork placed 6th and my Brisket was 5th, all out of 32 pro teams. In most contests this would be scores worthy of a GC, but not so this time. My good friends and Swamp Boys Q School grads “Unknown BBQ” scored a 4th, 2nd, 1st, and 2nd and edged me out by 0.05 of a point! I guess if I was going to be beat, I couldn’t think of any team better. Congratulations to my brothers from another mother!

On another note this was my last cookoff with my Stumps/Lang setup. They served me very well and now it’s time for the new chapter to begin.

Oct. 15-16: Coweta Up in Smoke BBQ Cook Off, Newnan GA, Grand Champion/41 teams (1st ribs – Perfect Score!)
In the 10 years the FBA has been in business there has never been a perfect score. That means that out of an estimated 16,000 bbq entries that have been turned in for judging in the FBA, not once has each of the six judges given an entry a 10 in Presentation, a 10 in Taste, and a 10 in Tenderness. That is until now!

Perfect Score in Ribs!

October 16, 2010, Swamp Boys became the first team in the history of the FBA to receive a perfect score, which was awarded in the Rib category. Honored, humbled, excited, and proud are just a few of the emotions I experienced that day. And then to make it all that much better, I won Grand Champion in a very tough field of my peers. And then lightening struck again: Wooley Bully BBQ – a graduate of Swamp Boys Q School – scored the seecond ever perfect score, this time in Brisket.

It was a great day, at a great contest, with great friends!

3rd Ribs, 23rd overall/42 teams

Can’t really explain what happened to me here. There is obviously a new taste profile that the judges are liking better than what they liked last year. It’s going to be my job now to figure out just what that is, or give them something even better.

But the big story for the weekend was recent Swamp Boys Q School graduates Unknown BBQ. Jason, Lee, and Clark all took my class just less than a month ago. This was their first FBA contest since the class, and they had never won a first place in any category, or a Grand Championship. Well, they won a first in chicken, a first in ribs, and a first in brisket, along with Grand Champion. I’d say the class paid off for them! Congratulations guys!
